New reports on the COVID-19 pandemic reveal that a number of people who recovered from COVID-19 are experiencing so-called “long-hauler” symptoms.
While more research is needed, it’s suspected that these symptoms can last several months beyond recovery. Permanent damage is also a possible outcome, especially for people with pre-existing conditions.
Long-hauler patients have reported a wide range of symptoms, including fatigue, muscle aches, difficulty breathing, difficulty concentrating, anxiety, and memory problems.
These symptoms can be debilitating and may even prevent you from being able to work. But will long-hauler symptoms qualify you for Social Security disability benefits?
The answer depends on whether you meet the basic requirements for Social Security disability:
- You may not earn $1,310 or more a month from working (2021)
- Your condition must be expected to last at least 12 months, and
- Your condition must severely limit your ability to work
At this time, the Social Security Administration (SSA) does have special rules for COVID-19 long-haulers. And it is unlikely that it will make such changes in the foreseeable future since the basic requirements can be applied to all applicants with different conditions.
Before applying for disability benefits based on long-hauler symptoms, make sure you meet the basic requirements to avoid being turned down by Social Security. Contacting an experienced disability attorney can help you find the best approach to your case.
